3 Ways to Prevent Gun Theft

  • 2 min read
According to a recent Bloomberg news article, gun thefts are on the rise. These thefts put guns into the hands of criminals that have no business having a gun. As a responsible gun owner, you want to do whatever you can to prevent gun theft. In some states, you can find yourself on the wrong side of the law if a thief were to steal your gun and use it to commit a crime because you did not secure it properly.

Here are three common sense ways to thwart gun thieves and keep your guns safe.

1. The Most Obvious: Lock’em Up

The best way to secure your guns in your home is to lock them away in a gun safe. But not just any safe! You want a high-quality safe with an electronic lock that makes it even more difficult for a thief to steal your guns. The goal of a thief is to get into your home fast and get out even quicker to avoid getting caught. But when a thief breaks into your home and comes up against a strong and sturdy gun safe, they are going to stop and think twice instead of trying to break into it.

2. Size Does Matter

Even if you have a small gun, you should prevent its theft by locking it away. Keeping your gun in your sock drawer or under your mattress makes it easy pickings for a crook. But not all safes can adequately prevent gun theft. A small, lightweight safe can be easily picked up and walked away with. In fact, most smaller gun safes can be opened by simply dropping them. If you want a smaller and secure gun safe, it is a good idea to consider one of Liberty’s super-secure gun vaults.

3. Out of Sight, Out of Mind

There are times where you might be transporting your gun, whether it is to the gun range or maybe to go hunting. The last thing you want to do is tip off potential thieves that you have a gun or multiple guns in your vehicle. Make sure your gun is locked up in the trunk or glove box of your vehicle. But this is not enough, make sure that you have ammo boxes, gun accessories, or clothing that might signify you have a gun in your vehicle out of sight, too. Avoid leaving your vehicle unattended when you are transporting your guns. As soon as you get back home, remove your gun(s) from your vehicle and immediately store it/them away in your gun safe.

Liberty Safe sells high-quality safes that prevent gun theft.
